Updates with FT report, additional context

Investing.com-- NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) and OpenAI CEOs are planning to pledge billions of dollars to build UK data centers when they head to the country next week at the same time as U.S. President Donald Trump, Bloomberg and the Financial Times reported on Friday.

The two companies will partner with London-based data center business Nscale Global Holdings Ltd on the project, Bloomberg reported, citing people with knowledge of the matter.

The Financial Times reported that the UK government will provide energy for the project, OpenAI will provide access to its artificial intelligence tools, while Nvidia will supply its advanced chips.

The data centers are expected to be worth billions of dollars, the reports said.

The reports come amid growing demands from the artificial intelligence industry for more computing power, given the outsized requirements of flagship large-language models such as OpenAI’s GPT series.

For Nvidia, the move also represents more potential customers for its advanced AI processors.

OpenAI and Nvidia have collaborated in the past, having released two open-source AI models together in early-August.

The AI startup had earlier this year pledged a combined $500 billion with Japan’s SoftBank Group Corp. (TYO:9984) to build out more data center infrastructure in the United States, although recent reports showed this venture was progressing slowly.

The potential timing of the data center announcement-- in that it will coincide with Trump’s visit to the UK-- could also represent the U.S. aiding the UK with its development of sovereign AI capabilities.

Huang and Altman had in May accompanied Trump in his tour of the Gulf, where Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have both poured billions into projects aimed at establishing regional AI hubs.

Trump has also raised the prospect of supplying U.S. AI technology to close allies. The U.S. and UK had signed a broader trade deal earlier this year.
