SAN FRANCISCO - Planet Labs PBC (NYSE: PL), a prominent provider of Earth data, has secured a contract with the Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) Pacific, the company announced today. The multi-million dollar deal involves integrating Planet's satellite data into the SeaVision platform, a maritime situational awareness tool used by the Department of Transportation.

Under the terms of the contract, Planet Labs Federal Inc., a fully owned subsidiary, will provide daily global PlanetScope data and high-resolution SkySat data to enhance vessel detection and monitoring across significant areas of the Pacific. The contract also includes technology from SynMax, a partner of Planet, to facilitate vessel detection using analytics technology over Planet data.

Planet's PlanetScope constellation offers broad area management, supplying SeaVision with a comprehensive view of ocean areas. Additionally, NIWC Pacific will have access to SkySat data, allowing for detailed imagery capture.

SynMax's Theia technology, an AI enhancement, will also be utilized for the detection of maritime events at strategic and tactical levels, which is vital for identifying illegal activities such as unreported fishing, illicit transfers, and vessel spoofing.

The integration of electro-optical imagery with high-resolution imagery into SeaVision aims to improve maritime domain awareness in the Pacific. The unclassified data can be used to corroborate alternative datasets, including Automatic Identification System (AIS) positions, and can be shared with SeaVision users to promote a common understanding of the maritime domain.

Jon Powers, General Manager of Planet Federal, expressed enthusiasm about providing maritime insights to support the SeaVision mission, leveraging Planet's unique broad area imagery collection capability.
