Investing.com -- Telefónica’s Board of Directors has approved the appointment of Emilio Gayo as the new Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Executive Director. Gayo, who has over 30 years of executive experience, replaces the outgoing COO, Ángel Vilá. In addition to Gayo’s appointment, the board has also endorsed Borja Ochoa as the new CEO of Telefónica Spain, along with several other significant changes in the company’s Executive Committee.

Gayo, a Telecommunications Engineering graduate with an MBA from IESE, has held several key positions at Telefónica since joining the group in 2004. His roles have included General Manager of International Operations at Telefónica Móviles and Director of Business Development, Strategy and Regulation at Telefónica Latam. Since 2018, Gayo has served as CEO of Telefónica Spain.

In his new role as COO, Gayo will oversee the company’s operations in Spain, Brazil, Germany, and the United Kingdom (TADAWUL:4280), as well as the B2B, Telefónica Tech, Telefónica Infra, and gCTIO units. The Hispam business unit will also report to Gayo, consolidating the management of all geographies under his responsibility.

Ángel Vilá, who has had a career spanning more than 25 years at Telefónica, will step down as a Director of Telefónica but will remain a member of the Board of Virgin-Media O2. He will also be proposed for a position on the Board of Telefónica Germany and will continue to serve as an advisor to the Executive Chairman, Marc Murtra.

Borja Ochoa, the new CEO of Telefónica Spain, has previously served as General Director of Defence and Security at Indra and CEO of Minsait Payments. Ochoa, who has over 18 years of experience in business transformation processes, technology, and innovation, will succeed Gayo in the CEO role.

Sofía Collado, formerly CHRO at Indra, will take over as the leader of Telefónica Tech. Collado has more than 25 years of experience in the management of consulting units in technological environments and international markets.

Sebas Muriel, a Telecommunications Engineer and MBA from IESE, will return to Telefónica to take on the position of Chief Digital Officer. Muriel has previously served as CEO of GroupM Spain and has extensive experience in business management and digital transformation.

In addition to these appointments, the Board of Directors of Telefónica has approved changes in the Telefónica of Spain Executive Committee. The company has simplified its structure by eliminating the position of CEO held by Sergio Oslé. Daniel Domenjó will assume the position of CEO of Movistar+. Ana Porto has been appointed as Global Communications Director, reporting to Eduardo Navarro.

The executive chairman of Telefónica, Marc Murtra, expressed his gratitude to the departing directors, Ángel Vilá, Chema Alonso, and José Cerdán, and welcomed the new appointees, Borja Ochoa, Sebas Muriel, and Sofía Collado, to the Executive Committee. Telefónica’s Executive Committee remains committed to generating value for all its stakeholders and meeting the financial and operational objectives of the company.
