Investing.com-- Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) said on Monday evening that it will begin producing its long awaited Semi trucks by the end of 2025 at its Nevada gigafactory, after years of promising and delaying the product.

The company said in a video posted to YouTube that it was building out a production line for Semis in its Nevada gigafactory campus with an annual capacity of 50,000 units. Tesla will also prepare for high-volume production in the coming quarter.

“First units are set to be on the line by the end of this year, and we’ll be ramping the factory throughout 2026,” Dan Priestley, who leads the Semi program at Tesla, said in the video.

Tesla had unveiled the Semi in 2017, and had produced limited numbers of the vehicle before production was stalled in 2022. CEO Elon Musk had told investors in 2022 that he aimed to make 50,000 Semis in 2024.

Still, the company has delivered at least 50 Semis to Pepsi, which the latter is using as part of its U.S. fleet.

The Semi represents another attempt by Tesla to diversify away from its core consumer EV business, which has been struggling with a sharp slowdown in sales. Slowing sales are also linked to boycotts in the U.S. and Europe over CEO Elon Musk’s political affiliations.

The company faces fresh headwinds from U.S. President Donald Trump imposing steep trade tariffs on China, which stand to drastically increase the cost of parts imported from the country.

Tesla had last week withdrawn its 2025 growth outlook, stating that it would revisit the target in three months amid heightened uncertainty over the economy and a Sino-U.S. trade war.
