Investing.com -- President Trump announced on Wednesday that the United States will impose a 25% tariff plus penalties on India starting August 1, citing the country’s purchases of Russian military equipment and energy.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that despite India being considered a friend of the United States, trade relations have been limited due to India’s high tariffs, which he described as "among the highest in the World."
The president also criticized India for what he called "the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country."
Trump specifically pointed to India’s military purchases from Russia, calling India "Russia’s largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China." He connected these transactions to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, stating these purchases occur "at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE."
The new tariffs and associated penalties will take effect on August 1, according to the president’s announcement.
"INDIA WILL THEREFORE BE PAYING A TARIFF OF 25%, PLUS A PENALTY FOR THE ABOVE, STARTING ON AUGUST FIRST. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER. MAGA!" Trump wrote in his social media post.
