Investing.com-- U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday evening that he was bringing a $15 billion defamation lawsuit against the New York Times (NYSE:NYT), claiming that the newspaper was biased against him and towards the Democrat Party.
Trump in a social media post called the NYT “virtual mouthpiece for the Radical Left Democrat Party,” calling the newspaper’s endorsement of 2024 presidential candidate Kamala Harris “the single largest illegal Campaign contribution, EVER.”
“The New York Times has been allowed to freely lie, smear, and defame me for far too long, and that stops, NOW! ” Trump said in the post, adding that the suit was being brought in Florida.
The president touted his “successful litigation” against Disney’s ABC and Paramount’s CBS, with both cases having settled in favor of the 47th president.
Trump had last week threatened to sue the NYT for publishing articles covering a suggestive note and drawing that the president allegedly gifted to disgraced financier Jeffery Epstein in 2003.
Trump had in July filed a $10 billion lawsuit against the Wall Street Journal, parent Dow Jones, and owner Rupert Murdoch for its coverage of Trump’s potential ties to Epstein.
The president has repeatedly railed against the NYT and other mainstream news organizations, which he claims are biased against him.
Trump had in 2006 sued NYT journalist Timothy O’Brien for claiming in his book TrumpNation that Trump’s net worth was far lower than claimed. Trump had then sought $5 billion in damages, but the case was dismissed in 2009.
