Investing.com-- The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and Boeing (NYSE:BA) have issued private notifications that the fuel cutoff switch locks on Boeing aircraft are safe, amid scrutiny following last month’s fatal crash of an Air India Boeing 787-8, Reuters reported on Sunday, citing internal documents and multiple sources.

A Continued Airworthiness Notification sent by the FAA to Civil Aviation Authorities on July 11 stated that although the locking design of fuel control switches is similar across several Boeing models, the agency does not consider the issue an "unsafe condition" requiring an airworthiness directive, the report said.

Boeing reiterated FAA’s stance in a recent Multi-Operator Message to carriers, sources told Reuters.

The move follows the preliminary findings by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, which revealed that both engine fuel switches flipped to “cutoff” shortly after takeoff, killing all but one of the 242 people onboard.

The preliminary report cited a 2018 FAA advisory that recommended, but did not mandate, the checks of the locking mechanism. Air India reportedly did not perform these checks as they were not mandatory.

Pilot union ALPA India has rejected pilot error assumptions and demanded observer status in the ongoing probe.
