VILNIUS - Lithuanian energy company Ignitis Group announced on Sunday that it has made final investment decisions on three battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Lithuania with a combined capacity of 291 MW power and 582 MWh storage.
The projects will be equipped by German company Rolls-Royce (OTC:RYCEY) Solutions GmbH, which will provide the equipment and integration services for all three installations.
Two of the projects will be located adjacent to existing wind farms operated by the Group’s subsidiary Ignitis Renewables in Kelmė (147 MW/294 MWh) and Mažeikiai (45 MW/90 MWh) districts. The third project (99 MW/198 MWh) will be situated near the Kruonis Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Power Plant operated by another subsidiary, Ignitis Gamyba.
The company has submitted applications for state aid for the Kelmė and Kruonis projects under Lithuania’s EUR 102 million fund for BESS projects, which has a 500 MWh cap per entity and its related undertakings.
Construction is expected to begin in 2025, with commercial operations targeted for 2027. The total investment for the three projects is approximately EUR 130 million.
Ignitis Group stated that the battery systems will help store energy when it is abundant and deploy it during peak demand periods, contributing to grid stability amid fluctuations in solar and wind generation.
The company added that the information and generation control systems of the BESS will be protected against remote access from countries identified as posing a threat under Lithuania’s National Security Strategy.
According to the press release statement, these projects align with Ignitis Group’s strategic objective to increase its green energy capacity from 1.4 GW in 2024 to 4-5 GW by 2030. With this announcement, the Group’s portfolio of projects under construction now totals 1.0 GW.
