Asian shares fell on Wednesday to a six-week trough, rattled
by fresh trade war concerns following threats from President
Donald Trump to Beijing, while increasing worries about a

WORLD OIL PRICES
Oil prices rose for a fifth day on Wednesday, buoyed by a
bigger-than-expected drop in U.S. inventories and as
investors awaited a widely expected cut in interest rates by
the Federal Reserve, the first in more than 10

SOUTH AFRICA MARKETS
South Africa's rand steadied on Tuesday as traders,
eschewing big transactions despite poor unemployment figures
and a warning of another loss from power utility Eskom,
stayed on the sidelines ahead of a U.S. monetary policy
announcement. MARKETS
The Kenyan shilling KES= weakened against the dollar to a
near five-year low on Tuesday due to importer demand and
excess liquidity in the money markets, traders
said. ELECTRICITY
Kenya Electricity Generating Co KEGN.NR has added 79
megawatts to the national grid from a new geothermal plant,
and the remainder of a total 158 MW to be produced by the
plant is expected to be connected at the end of August, the
company said on Tuesday. SECURITY
Nigerian police are seeking help from the general public to
arrest members of a banned Shi'ite Muslim group whose
protests were declared illegal on Sunday, the country's most
senior policeman said on Tuesday. REPUBLIC OF CONGO HEALTH
A second case of Ebola was detected on Tuesday in the
eastern Congolese city of Goma, a local health official
said, increasing concern the virus could establish a
foothold in the densely populated area close to the Rwandan
border. MINING
Burundi's gold, tin and rare earth minerals exports have
overtaken tea and coffee as the major source of foreign
exchange for the East African nation, the ministry of mining

Tanzanian police said on Tuesday they had arrested a
prominent investigative journalist and were looking into his
citizenship in another case triggering concern over press
freedom under President John Magufuli's rule. POWER
Zimbabwe has started importing 300 MW of electricity from a
regional power pool in a $15 million deal and is negotiating
for another 400 MW from South Africa, cabinet ministers said
on Tuesday, in a bid to end crippling power

The head of Sudan's ruling military council said an incident
in which at least four schoolchildren were shot dead at a
protest was "regrettable" and called for a quick resumption
